Some words from our volunteers.
Meet Linzi our Volunteer Co-ordinator:
Linzi's journey as a volunteer coordinator has been incredible. She witnesses the power of community and the profound impact that volunteers can have. Witnessing the change in our volunteers as they dedicate their free time to helping others is truly heartwarming.
Through their involvement, volunteers have not only given back to the community but have also experienced significant personal growth. From the first day to now, it's incredible to see their confidence growing. Many volunteers enter with a bit of uncertainty, but as time progresses, they blossom into more assured individuals, forming friendships that enrich their lives.
The positive effects on mental health are also noteworthy. Volunteers often express their satisfaction and happiness, which, in turn, creates a supportive network. These interactions foster a sense of belonging and community, vital for everyone's wellbeing.
Linzi thoroughly enjoys the lively energy of her coffee mornings with the public, the vibrant children’s half-term groups, residential activities, and the Christmas mission.

Volunteer Stories
Meet Lesley – her volunteering reflects transition, community, and newfound purpose. In March 2023, she discovered An Hour for Others (AHFO), a charity that deeply resonated with her after retiring just months earlier in December 2022. Initially planning to travel around Spain, she felt an immediate connection to AHFO while exploring its website.
Despite her natural confidence, new environments can make her feel a little bit uncomfortable. However, at AHFO, she felt welcomed from day one, supported by a genuinely warm team that allowed her to be her authentic self. Transitioning from banking and hospitality, she acquired proficiency in Excel through training, enabling her to manage essential evaluations for both internal records and external organisations. Her commitment to the charity also led her to complete important safeguarding training.
Lesley's contributions extend beyond administrative tasks. Whether assisting in children's groups or working at charity shops in Huyton, she consistently receives appreciation and warmth in return. Lesley knows that an AHFO has become a refuge that connects individuals, empowering them to overcome challenges together.
Recognising the importance of staying mentally sharp post-retirement, Lesley finds fulfilment in her role at AHFO. If she had to describe the organisation in three words, they'd be: Diverse, Joyful, Community.
Meet Christine, a devoted volunteer since 2015. After suffering the tragic loss of a close family member, she found hope and purpose when Gill and Kevin reached out and invited her to get involved. This opportunity helped Christine channel her grief into something positive, taking her mind off the devastation.
With a background in hospitality and a successful Telecoms business, Christine brought valuable event-organising skills and a wealth of connections to her new role. The experience of meeting so many genuine people who share a commitment to helping others has enriched her life.
At An Hour for Others, Christine discovered a unique community. She describes the bond between staff and volunteers as priceless. "If you could bottle how we feel daily being involved with AHFO, you would make a fortune!" Her passion reflects the organisation's spirit of togetherness and support.
AHFO is not just a charity; it is a safe haven for all community members. From kids' groups and bereavement support to food clubs and gym sessions, AHFO ensures that no one is left behind. As Christine says, “Whatever their need may be, AHFO has everyone covered.”
In Christine's words, if she had to sum up An Hour for Others in three words, they would be Altruistic, Genuine, Committed!
Meet Vicky:
A thoroughly dedicated volunteer.
In January 2024 I came across an article in the Liverpool Echo and was intrigued by what was happening beyond the door of a shop I passed daily. Since joining An Hour for Others (AHFO), my confidence has soared, and my outlook on life has transformed. After being medically retired before the age of 50, I once felt pretty useless. Now, volunteering has enriched my life with happiness.
In my role, I primarily work with children's groups, special events, and holiday provisions. The experience has been nothing short of amazing. You truly become part of a community that feels like a second family.
Volunteering here has opened up countless opportunities for me:
• I’m always learning new things.
• I meet fantastic families.
• I engage as an active member of the community.
• Most importantly, I am surrounded by positivity and happiness.
The impact we make is huge—encouraging young people to come together safely and have fun, offering numerous opportunities for them and their families, and fostering new friendships. Our successful food club and brilliant charity shops serve as vital spaces for everyone’s needs.
I particularly love the feel-good and self-help sessions, which have positively influenced my personal outlook. It's all about promoting strength and togetherness. If you're considering volunteering, I say a definite YES—join us!
If I had to sum up An Hour for Others in 3 words, it would be Promotes Strength and Togetherness!!
Meet Daniella, who began her volunteering journey in November 2024, following the heartbreaking loss of her boyfriend. Recognising his selfless and kind nature, she felt compelled to give back in his honour.
Volunteering with AHFO has been a transformative experience for Daniella. Surrounded by genuine individuals with open minds and hearts, she found comfort in her grief. The support of this community has been pivotal in her healing process, allowing her to channel her emotions into positive engagement.
Daniella discovered hidden talents while co-running a weekly drama group, an activity she now thoroughly enjoys. This newfound passion has not only enriched her life but has also allowed her to contribute creatively to the community.
Daniella emphasises the power of volunteering: “You get more than you give. The feeling of being able to help someone or lighten their load is unmatched.” She passionately shares her experiences with anyone who will listen, advocating for AHFO and its incredible impact.
This charity goes beyond immediate needs; it creates opportunities for connection and community. From food clubs to kids’ groups, AHFO is actively shaping a brighter future, providing a deep sense of belonging to everyone involved.
Her commitment to helping others shines through, inspiring those around her to get involved.
If Daniella had to sum up An Hour for Others in three words, they would be Positivity, Belonging, & Hope.
THE SHARP FAMILY STORY
The lovely Sharp family have supported An Hour For Others in many ways since day one. Alan, Liz and their 2 young daughters Ruby (10) & Isla (7) have volunteered as well as fundraised over the years in a variety of ways. The support from good-hearted local people has been so important to us in helping us grow and raise awareness across the City and beyond. Alan tells us his reasons for becoming involved as a family.
'Volunteering and fundraising for AHFO is a great way of giving something back to our community. My wife Liz has run a full Marathon and I have run a half marathon to raise funds by way of sponsors, but you can help in other ways too. Myself, wife and our 2 daughters aged 7 & 10 got involved in a clean up project for a community centre which was a great experience and it was great to see the impact it had on our girls who love making a difference, its a good way of showing the kids how important it is to help others. My daughter's have also done bucket collections at a local football club.
I would advise anyone to get involved with AHFO and make a difference, the feeling of helping others is like a buzz. you feel good about yourself as well as knowing you are doing your bit to help create a better society.'
WE CANT WAIT TO MEET YOU!
